More Women in Commercial Real Estate

Author: Diana Heeb Bivona

According to a survey released by the Commercial Real Estate Women Network (CREW), women are increasingly filling the ranks of the commercial real estate industry, but some of the field’s best jobs are proving harder to obtain. Overall in the past five years, the percentage of women in the commercial real estate field has grown steadily from 32 percent to 36 percent.

The biggest gains have been in property and asset management, where women now make up a slim majority, 51 percent, and financial services, where female executives now hold 44 percent of the jobs.

However, it has been harder for women to get the industry’s best-paying jobs, both in real estate development and in brokering pricey commercial office space deals.

“There is still a glass ceiling, noted Marianne Ajemian, a Boston real estate lawyer and president-elect of the area’s local CREW chapter.

While the number of women in brokerage rose, it still stands at only 23 percent, while the number of women in development, at 36 percent, has remained the same .

Additionally, women pulled down significantly lower pay in the field. While 58 percent of men surveyed for the study reported income of more than $150,000, for women, the number was only 24 percent.
